Candles are a very useful tool in magick. There are multiple ways to use them. And multiple ways for them to benefit the user. There is actually an entire form of magick centered around using candles. Each candle color has a different use, of course. But, we will get into that later. For starters, here is a short list of a few possibilities for candle use:
- Spiritual Protection
- Conduit for energy
- Dedication of spells
- Calming the environment/defusing negative energies
Basically, the best simile that I can think of to describe candle magick, is that it is similar to blowing out the candles on a birthday cake and making a wish. One of the differences is that instead of hoping for something to happen, you are declaring that it will. In this you can set a realistic time-frame, too. The most basic description of how to do this is:
- Decide on a goal.
- Pick the appropriate candle(color, size, et cetera).
- Visualize the end result.
- Focus your will/intent to manifest your goal.
It is honestly that simple…or is it? Well, along with any other form of magick, one must keep their intentions positive. If you send out harmful energy, be prepared to have negativity come back to you, three-fold(27 times power). Also, one must decide on what type of candle they are going to use or if they need to dress it in any oils, ribbons, or carve into it.
There are many rituals, and spells that call for using candles. And they tend to remain fairly basic. However, on occasion, you may need a seven-day candle(a candle that takes 7 days to burn). These are typically what one would see with Catholic Saints and prayers on them. But there are online shoppes that offer them without the Saints.
If it isn’t a seven-day candle that you need, you can use any kind of candle. Except for tea-lite. Those are too small and can’t properly hold the amount of energy needed for a spell. Your preference should be a large candle(roughly 3 inches wide by 4 inches tall). This way you can always have a go-to-candle.
one must keep their intentions positive only if they wish to. not all people who make use of spells/candles follow the Threefold Law, which is a Wiccan belief. not all witches/practitioners are Wiccan. there are different beliefs concerning laws of return and many people don’t believe in any laws of return. there are also methods of protection and warding if one is worried about negative energy coming back to them.
you can certainly make use of tea light candles. I use them in my practice all the time, they’re very useful, more affordable and often more practical for certain workings. the element (fire) and the energy is represented just fine with a tea light candle. not all spells require large candles. I also don’t like to re-use candles as this post suggests, but many people prefer to cleanse candles/tools before re-using them for different workings.
